Long before internet memes, reality television, and social media adopted these phrases, they were coined by Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ pioneers inside New York ballrooms. This dictionary offers tasteful, witty, and authentic definitions honoring their origins.
1. Kiki
An informal, laughter-filled social gathering or fun-first function where friends gather to share gossip, trade stories, dance, and relax without the pressure of major competition. Mimicking the sound of soft laughter ("kee-kee"), it represents an atmosphere of pure, welcoming joy. We explicitly named kiki.gay after this very tradition.
2. Mopping
The practice of shoplifting or procuring high-end designer attire, cosmetics, or runway accessories. Born historically out of poverty and financial exclusion, mopping allowed young trans and queer walkers to acquire the luxury fashion required to compete and win in categories like Executive Realness and High Fashion Runway.
3. Chopped
Being cut, disqualified, or eliminated by a judge during category inspection. When a judge signals a "chop," the walker's turn on the runway ends instantly due to improper attire, breaking character, or failing to meet category standards.
4. 10s Across the Board
Receiving a unanimous perfect score from every judge on the panel during initial category evaluation. Earning "10s across the board" signifies complete execution and qualifies the walker to advance into the head-to-head battle bracket.
5. Banji
Tough, urban, street-smart swagger and attitude (acronymized in modern ballroom as "Be Authentic Never Jeopardize Individuality"). Banji style blends hip-hop street fashion, hoodies, and baseball caps with fierce ballroom confidence.
6. Butch Queen
Ballroom terminology for a cisgender gay or bisexual man. Butch queens compete in dedicated divisions across categories including BQ Realness, BQ Vogue Fem, BQ Runway, and BQ Sex Siren.
7. Trade
A conventionally masculine, straight-acting, or straight-passing man who exudes unrefined physical magnetism. In ballroom lore, "rough trade" refers to men who project traditional street masculinity.
8. Fish
Achieving flawless, convincing feminine realness and grace, particularly in drag and Femme Queen categories. "Serving fish" means presenting feminine beauty so impeccably that it passes seamlessly anywhere.
9. Gagging
Being utterly overwhelmed with awe, shock, or admiration by an astonishing look, performance, or moment. Saying "I am gagging" or "she gagged the room" means the display was so breathtaking it left everyone speechless.
10. Serving
Delivering a look, attitude, or performance with complete confidence and flawless execution ("serving face," "serving body," "serving executive realness").
11. Hunty
A playful, cheeky blend of "honey" and "cunt," used as a warm, affectionate term of endearment between close friends in the scene.
12. Over / Ova
Beyond fabulous, dramatic, or unbeatable. Declaring "that look is ova!" means the presentation is so supreme that competition is effectively finished.
13. Peanut Butter
Flawlessly smooth, fluid, and effortless execution in dance or makeup application ("smooth like peanut butter"). It describes a performance or beauty look with zero harsh lines or abrupt interruptions.
14. Tea
Truth, facts, insider news, or juicy gossip. "Spilling the tea" means sharing authentic news, while "that's the tea" confirms an undisputed truth.
15. Kaypi (KP)
Ballroom slang (phonetic for KP / "Keep It Pushin'") used to encourage someone to stay resilient, hold their head high, and keep strutting forward despite setbacks, drama, or chops.
