At a ball, competition is structured into distinct categories. Guided by the microphone master (the MC or commentator) shouting beat-driven chants over house music beats, walkers step onto the floor when their category is announced with the iconic phrase: "Category is..."
Categories test specific artistic disciplines, physical attributes, or social performances. They allow competitors to showcase beauty, illusion, fashion precision, dance athleticism, or seductive allure before a panel of respected ballroom judges.
Major Ballroom Categories Explained
• Realness
Historically the most critical category in ballroom. Realness measures a walker's ability to pass convincingly in heterosexual or cisgender society without raising suspicion. Originally born out of survival—allowing trans women and gay men to navigate hostile street environments safely—Realness sub-categories include Femme Queen Realness, Butch Queen Realness, Executive Realness (wall street suits and briefcases), Schoolboy/Schoolgirl Realness, and Transman Realness.
• Face
A pure beauty category evaluating facial bone structure, skin clarity, eye symmetry, teeth, smile, and expressive charisma. Judges inspect walkers up close without makeup distraction to determine whose facial beauty reigns supreme.
• Body
Celebrates physical proportion, muscle definition, curves, or tone depending on the division (e.g., Luscious Body, Models Body, Fitness Body). Walkers present their physique with supreme confidence and poise.
• Runway
High fashion modeling and strutting evaluated on posture, pace, garment presentation, turns, and attitude. Split into European Runway (regal, tall, high-fashion poise) and All-American Runway (bouncy, athletic, commercial, Paris-style walk).
• Sex Siren
Erotic magnetism, confidence, and sensual charm. Walkers captivate judges through seductive eye contact, bodily movement, and uninhibited sexual confidence.
Judging Mechanics: Tens vs. Chops
The judging panel consists of Legends, Icons, and house leaders seated at a long table facing the runway. Every walker's journey through a category has two distinct phases:
1. Getting Tens ("10s Across the Board"): The initial inspection. A walker struts before the judges. If every judge raises a score card of 10, the walker receives "10s across the board" and advances to the battle round. If even one judge holds up a score card below 10, the walker is eliminated.
2. Getting Chopped: If a walker fails to meet category requirements, breaks character, wears improper attire, or lacks confidence, a judge cuts them immediately by signaling a "chop." Getting chopped ends the walker's turn on the floor instantly.
Walkers who receive 10s enter head-to-head battles—facing off one-on-one until the judges declare an ultimate category winner and award the trophy.
