At its simplest root, kiki is a Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ slang term born in New York City that means a gathering of friends for laughter, gossip, relaxed conversation, and uninhibited good times ("let's have a kiki"). It mimics the sound of soft laughter ("kee-kee-kee") and represents a social oasis where queer people can drop their guard, kick off their shoes, and enjoy pure, unadulterated fellowship.
While pop culture popularized the term through music and television in the 2010s, its deepest expression lives within ballroom culture, where the kiki scene evolved into a vital cultural movement of its own.
The Kiki Scene vs. Main Ballroom
To appreciate what makes a kiki so special, it helps to understand how it complements the major ballroom scene (often referred to as the "Major Scene"). Major balls are high-stakes, grand affairs where legendary houses compete for massive trophies, cash prizes, and lifelong prestige. The kiki scene emerged in the early 2000s as a youth-led, developmental, and community-focused alternative. Organized by social health organizations and younger ballroom leaders, kiki functions were created specifically for "kiki kids"—younger walkers, teenagers, and newcomers who wanted to practice their catwalk, test out new categories, and learn ballroom etiquette in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
Kiki balls feature creative, playful, 'just for fun' categories—ranging from Pajama Realness and Anime Runway to DIY Fashion battles. While competitive excellence is still praised, the primary goal of a kiki is connection, health advocacy, mentorship, and joy.
