Hillcrest:
San Diego's Gayborhood, Explained

San Diego's gayborhood, anchored by a giant rainbow pride flag the size of a sail, one neighborhood over from Balboa Park's museums and gardens.

The history

Hillcrest became San Diego's queer core in the 1970s around University Avenue; the neighborhood led California's second city on marriage equality and hosts one of the largest Pride festivals in the country each July, marching straight past the giant pride flag at the neighborhood's entrance.

Nightlife changes fast: bars open and close, so treat this as the durable landmark list and check current venues on kiki.gay's city pages before a visit.

The honest read

Every gayborhood faces the same crosscurrents: rising rents, apps replacing bars, and the question of whether queer geography still matters when you can find your people online. The neighborhoods above answer yes, differently each: some as nightlife capitals, some as political ground zero, some as simply places where being queer is the background noise instead of the event. The one you pick says a lot about the life you want · and kiki.gay exists to make every one of them easier to actually live in.
