Dupont Circle:
Washington DC's Gayborhood, Explained

DC's classic gayborhood: a traffic circle with a park in the middle, embassies on the sides, and decades of queer political power radiating outward.

The history

Gay DC organized around Dupont from the 1970s, a few blocks from the institutions activists spent their careers lobbying. It anchored the fight against the military ban and the defense of marriage era, and hosted some of the earliest Pride events in the country.

Nightlife changes fast: bars open and close, so treat this as the durable landmark list and check current venues on kiki.gay's city pages before a visit.

The honest read

Every gayborhood faces the same crosscurrents: rising rents, apps replacing bars, and the question of whether queer geography still matters when you can find your people online. The neighborhoods above answer yes, differently each: some as nightlife capitals, some as political ground zero, some as simply places where being queer is the background noise instead of the event. The one you pick says a lot about the life you want · and kiki.gay exists to make every one of them easier to actually live in.
